Some disbelieve in angels and in demons, but the scripture teaches that both exist.© 1980 in U.S.A. by R. O. Corvin - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
According to Paul's writings (Colossians 2:18), some worshipped angels. Paul condemned this. They are created beings (Nehemiah 9:6), and like men, they are to worship God and not be worshipped.
There is one angel, however, mentioned in both the Old and the New Testaments who was more than angel, who was to be worshipped. He was the angel of the Lord, known also as the Jehovah angel, the Passover angel, the captain of the Lord's host, plus other titles. He was the second person of the Holy Trinity who appeared as an angel to communicate a message or to perform a blessing or a judgment. He was the pre-existent Christ.
We see him meeting with Hagar (Genesis 16:7-14) and giving her instructions as to what she should do. He appeared to Abraham (Genesis 22:11-18) and commended him for his faith and supplied a ram to be sacrificed instead of his son.
To Jacob, the angel of God appeared in a dream (Genesis 31:3) advising him to return to the land of his kindred. To Moses, he appeared (Exodus 3:2-5) in a flame of fire in the midst of a bush. He manifested himself to the Israelites (Exodus 14:19) in a pillar of the cloud to guide them in their wandering. The angel of the Lord (Judges 6:11-23) appeared and informed Gideon that he was a mighty man of valour. To the mother of Samson the angel of the Lord appeared and informed her about the birth of a son. The angel of the Lord confronted David at the threshing floor of Ornan (I Chronicles 21:14-18). This same angel of the Lord smote 185,000 Assyrians (2 Kings 19:35) in one night.
The angel of the Lord was the pre-existent Christ who through Mary became Jesus Christ.
In most cases where angels are mentioned in the Bible they are classified as created beings who are not to be worshipped. An angel is classified as a christophany only when he has divine prerogatives and is worshipped.
